QPR Matches 1888 - 1898

This cartoon illustration was made for the QPR match against London Caledonianin illustrated 13 November 1898 in The Weekly Dispatch. This type of illustrations were common in the late 1890s. QPR in green and white stripes. Image © The British Library Board. All Rights Reserved.

For a seasonal description of events I recommend the very detailed and reliable overview in Gordon Macey's book ”The Official History of Queen’s Park Rangers, 2000 edition. What differs from my research is the number of grounds and the partly, the years they were used.

Quite a few matches were played during the amateur days. From the very beginning, it was probably mostly internal matches between the club members, to soon also include teams from nearby clubs. The first cup tournament QPR participated was the 1892-93: West London Observers Challenge Cup The first league was: same season and organized by the same newspaper as the cup: West London Observers League.

Statistics
Sources

I have mainly used statistics produced by Kenneth Westerlund, Helsinki, Finland. Source at QPR.net.The original source include dates, opponents, result, goalscorees.

Abbreviations

Competitions:
Empty Competitions fields means friendlies.

Cups

WLCC: West London Challenge Cup
WLOC: West London Observer Cup
LSC: London Senior Cup
MSC: Middlesex Senior Cup
FACup: Football Association Challenge Cup
FAmC: Football Association Amateur Cup
LChC: London Charity Cup

Leagues
WLL: West London League
WLA: West London Alliance
LL: London League

Others
Empty Competitions fields means friendlies.
Second, reserves: Second or reserve team
Springtime T: In the beginning QPR made for several years a spring-time tour often to Berkshire.

Other notes:
Grey background color: Match did'nt played
Yellow background color: Uncertain. Has to be checked.
f = Fixture
H = Home game
A = Away game
c = ground location changed. Rather often the home club choosed to play on the opponents ground. The actually ground which the game were played to is shown with the c besides. This was a rule in cup tournament but it’s also used for friendlies. Sometime the teams found a neutral ground. A good passing team could have a bad home ground and their play could benefit from the oppenets better ground.

Most played teams

Most games had been played against Stanley FC. This was a club from Putney whose worst rivals were Fulham. In the early 1890s it was one of the stronger clubs in West London.

It’s not always possible to determine in detail which teams were better or worse. In addition to a first team, the bigger clubs also had a second and third team. Sometimes a mixture of the first and second teams could play. For some early matches against Brentford, it was usual for Rangers' second team to face Brentford's first team. This also applies to matches against some other clubs. The clubs prioritized the cups, while friendlies and league matches were less valuable. In the matches against the best teams, Rangers played with the best possible teams, e.g. against Fulham and Stanley.
